PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separation membrane element with which a high-temperature mixture such as steam in synthetic gas can be separated/removed selectively without being cooled and the separated mixture can be used circularly without being cooled. SOLUTION: This separation membrane element is composed of a separation membrane 3 obtained by depositing a gel layer manufactured from an organic or inorganic metallic compound in the pores formed on the outer side face of a base material 2 consisting of a tubular inorganic porous body.
