Instrument for recording and playback of audio and or video digital signals has a first signal processing unit and a second unit for recording and storage of said signal under the control of a control unit. The control unit has a non-volatile memory for storing recording information during a recording session. When the recording is complete and the recording written to a file system or similar, the non-volatile memory is cleared.
