PURPOSE: Provided are an extract of Cistanche deserticola Y.C.MA showing enhancing activity of neurite outgrowth and neurotrophic effects and a composition containing the same. The composition is effective for protection of nerve cells and prevention and treatment of degenerative brain diseases. CONSTITUTION: A crude extract of Cistanche deserticola Y.C.MA has nerve growth factor like activities, such as increase of the growth of nerve, inhibition of nerve cell apoptosis and regeneration of damaged nerve cells. A composition for protection of nerve cells and prevention and treatment of degenerative diseases comprises the crude extract and its polar or non-polar solvent extract, wherein the polar solvent includes water, methanol, butanol or their mixture and the non-polar solvent includes hexane, chloroform, and ethylacetate.
