A magnetic recording medium comprises: a substrate; a nickel oxide underlayer on said substrate; and a cobalt-containing maghemite film which is provided on said nickel oxide underlayer, which has a spacing of a (311) plane of not more than 0.2510 nm (2.510 ANGSTROM ), a spacing of a (222) plane of not more than 0.2415 nm (2.415 ANGSTROM ) or a spacing of a (220) plane of not more than 0.2950 nm (2.950 ANGSTROM ), and in which the ratio of the X-ray diffraction spectrum peak intensity of the (311), (222) or (220) plane of the said film to the X-ray diffraction spectrum peak intensity of the (400) plane is more than 0.5:1.
