Catalyst carrier and process for preparing thereof

Catalyst carrier (I) comprises (a) 40-95 wt.% particulate alpha -Al2O3 with 0.4-4mu crystallite size and (b) a balance of alpha -Al2O3 generated in situ by a sol gel process. (I) has crush strength of >=5 lbs and packing density of >=38 lbs/cu.ft. (I) is obtd. by mixing 3-8mu size particulate alpha -Al2O3, a hydrated alpha -Al2O3 precursor in amts. to provide 5-60 wt.% of the total wt. of alpha -Al2O3 in (I), 5-40 wt.% burnout material and H2O. This mixt. is extruded, fired to convert the precursor to alpha -Al2O3 and form (I) comprising 3-8mu size alpha -Al2O3 dispersed in an alpha -Al2O3 matrix.
