The assembly to deflect fish and debris from the water flow through a channel, with defined walls (8), has a bypass channel (4) to take part of the water flow. At least one angled continuous belt (11) passes around rollers (9,10) at each end of the loop to form a funnel structure (14) with the channel, which allows water to flow through it but carries any fish and debris upwards into the bypass channel. A stripper (17) at the upper end of the belt ensures that all carried matter moves into the bypass.
