A hydraulic constriction (13-13) can be filled with a second electrically conductive liquid, to provide an electrical connection between a reservoir (11-11) of a first electrically conductive liquid and the hydraulic system. An electrode system (1-1), for connecting to an electro-hydraulic microsystem in which electro-osmosis and/or electrophoresis can be carried out, comprises a reservoir which can be at least partially filled with a first electrically conductive liquid and an electrode (12-12), preferably comprising a solid material, such as platinum, which is in contact with the liquid in the reservoir. The electrode system also includes a hydraulic constriction, preferably a capillary channel with a cross-section of 1-100, preferably 5-20 micron2, which can be filled with a second electrically conductive liquid to provide an electrical connection between the reservoir and hydraulic system. The constriction provides a relatively high resistance to hydraulic flow and diffusion between the reservoir and hydraulic system.
