Effervescent solid composition (A) comprises chitosan or its derivatives or salts or a component releasing carbon dioxide in an acidic environment. An Independent claim is also included for treatment of dermal wounds in mammals and prophylactic or wound-healing treatment of lactating animals suffering from mastitis which comprises mixing (A) with an aqueous liquid to form a solution or suspension and contacting the mammal or teats of the animal with the solution or suspension.
