1,149,926. Modified phenoplasts. UGINE KUHLMANN. 3 March, 1967 [3 March, 1966], No. 10196/67. Heading C3R. The invention comprises addition to a phenolaldehyde condensation mixture of a polyhydroxy- or polyamino-derivative of either a polychloro diphenyl or a polychlorinatedpolyphenylbenzene. The condensation mixture may be acid or alkaline and should contain at least 5% of modifier. In typical Example 1 phenol and bis[N-(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]octachlorodiphenyl are treated with 30% formal at pH 9 and 90‹ C. The pH is obtained by addition of NaOH. In other examples cresol is used as phenol. Modifiers used are bis[hydroxyethoxy]octachlorodiphenyl, dihydroxy - octachlorodiphenyl, bis [N-(2-aminoethyl)amino] octachlorodiphenyl, bis (2,2-dimethylol-n-butoxy)octachlorodiphenyl and bis[N-(2-hydroxyethyl] - amino - dodecachloroparaterphenyl. pHs range from 1À3 to 9 and are adjusted by addition of HCl or NaOH and temperatures range from 85‹-100‹ C. In Example 3 pine resin is added and in Examples 4 and 5 the product was in two layers, the lower containing the phenolic resin. |
