PURPOSE: A method for controlling operation of a normal/counterclockwise direction compressor of a refrigerator is provided to improve reliability of the compressor by reducing number of on/off of the compressor due to difference of cooling power depending on rotating direction of the compressor. CONSTITUTION: A method includes the steps of: a first step(SP1,SP2,SP3) determining whether a compressor of a refrigerator works in clockwise direction or counterclockwise direction while operating the compressor; a second step(SP4,SP5) selecting first working range, -0.5 deg.C-+0.5 deg.C, with respect to a temperature sensor in the refrigerator if the compressor is determined to work in clockwise direction in the first step, and controlling operation of the compressor based on the first working range; and a third step(SP6,SP7) selecting second working range, -0.3 deg.C-+0.3 deg.C, with respect to the temperature sensor in the refrigerator if the compressor is determined to work in counterclockwise direction in the first step, and controlling operation of the compressor based on the second working range.
