PURPOSE: Provided is 3,4-dihydroxymandelic acid compound which effectively inhibits the activity of tyrosinase that principally acts on the synthesis of melanine. therefore, it is used as an active ingredient of cosmetic compositions for skin whitening, skin anti-aging and skin protecting effects and therapeutic agents for skin diseases. CONSTITUTION: An tyrosinase inhibiting composition is characterized by containing 3,4-dihydroxymandelic acid compound which is represented by the formula(1). Therefore, cosmetic or pharmaceutical composition containing the 3,4-dihydroxymandelic acid compound as an active ingredient have high skin whitening effect with less toxicity and treatment effect on the skin disease associated with oversynthesis of melanine.
