PURPOSE: An apparatus for recording and playing video, and a method for controlling a memory device thereof are provided to selectively assign a buffer area and preserve temporarily stored video signals for a long term. CONSTITUTION: A remote controller transmits a request signal for temporarily storing a predetermined quantity of video signals received from a video signal generating source at a buffer area which is temporarily assigned to a hard disk driver(S310). A main control unit temporarily stores the received video signals at the buffer area(S320). The remote controller transmits a request signal for long storing the video signals temporarily stored at the buffer area(S330). The main controller stores the received signals according to a set recording method(S340). The main controller confirms whether a delete command signal is received related to the temporarily stored video signals(S350). If so, the main controller deletes the video signals temporarily stored at the buffer area(S360).
