PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for loading optical discs are provided to selectively insert or eject optical discs of different sizes through a slot loading technique without separate trays. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for loading optical discs that selectively inserts or ejects optical discs of different sizesincludes an optical sensor(20) and a controller. The sensor is employed at the center of a moving path of the optical discs to detect a signal having a high level and a low level according to a recording face and a center hole of each optical disc. The controller judges the size and movement state of the optical disc with reference to the high level section of the signal output from the sensor when the optical disc is inserted or ejected into or from a deck(100).
