PURPOSE: A portable computer and a controlling method thereof are provided to stably use the portable computer through reliability for a battery by removing troublesomeness to attach/detach an adaptor while executing a calibration function for initializing a battery capacity, and by selecting/executing the calibration function conveniently. CONSTITUTION: A control block of the portable computer comprises a battery capacity initializing switch(11), a charging/discharging switching circuit(19), a charging circuit(15), and a controller(13). The charging/discharging switching circuit switches the battery(17) to be charged from the adaptor(21), or to charge a voltage to a main board or various devices(23). The charging circuit charges the power from the adaptor to the battery. The controller performs the calibration function by cutting off the adaptor power supplied to the main board when the battery capacity initializing switch is selected.
