PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an eddy-current speed reducer wherein the height of permanent magnets and the gap between the permanent magnets and a switch plate are defined and thereby magnetic flux which escapes from the switch plate to cases before and in the direction of rotation of a rotor is suppressed when braking is applied for the enhancement of braking torque and permanent magnets for use in the speed reducer. SOLUTION: The eddy-current is characterized in that the gap between the outer circumferential surfaces 11c of the permanent magnets 11 and the inner circumferential surface of a switch plate 3 placed opposite to the outer circumferential surfaces 11c is made narrower at the central portion 11a than at at least part of the edge portions 11b of the permanent magnet 11 or the switch plate 3, otherwise, the height of the permanent magnets 11 is made higher at the central portion 11a than at at least part of the edge portions 11b.
