PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for profitably producing an acylacetonitrile compound. SOLUTION: This method for producing the acylacetonitrile compound represented by formula (1) [R<SP>1</SP>is a (1 to 6C alkoxy) 1 to 4C alkyl, or the like; X is a halogen atom, a 1 to 6C alkyl or a 1 to 4C haloalkyl; (m) is an integer of 1 to 3; Y is a halogen atom, a 1 to 6C alkyl or a 1 to 4C haloalkyl; and (n) is an integer of 1 to 3] is characterized by reacting anα-phenylcyanoacetate compound represented by formula (2) with a benzoyl halide compound represented by formula (3) in the presence of a base and a phase transfer catalyst in a two phase system comprising an organic solvent and water.
