PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element with a long service life suppressing luminance reduction, the generation and growth of a dark spot and a voltage rise due to element driving, and maintaining a stable light emitting characteristic for a long period of time by improving adhesion between an electrode and an organic layer. SOLUTION: In the organic electroluminescent element, a first electrode, the organic layer having at least a light emitting layer, and a second electrode are sequentially laminated on a substrate. It is characterized in that a self-assembled monomolecular film comprising a straight chain organic molecule having a functional group directly chemisorbed on the surface of a first electrode such as a lower alkoxysilyl group, chlorosilyl group, carboxyl group, phosphonic acid group, or hydroxamic acid group on one end, and an end group showing a hydrophobic property such as a methyl group or fluoro group on the other end is formed on the first electrode of an organic layer side.
