PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a writing speed switching method for an optical disk device, capable of shortening the data writing time as a whole by shortening the time of speed switching. SOLUTION: The writing speed switching method for an optical disk device 30 provided with a zone CLV control means 32 for switching a linear velocity in stages, and a recording protection means 31 to control to suspend data writing until a predetermined amount of data or more is stored in a buffer memory 16 when buffer underrunning occurs is characterized in that when data writing reaches the address of a writing speed to be switched, the recording protection means 31 is actuated irrespective of a data residual amount in the buffer memory 16 to suspend data writing and, after the suspension, a linear speed at the time of writing is switched to resume the data writing.
