PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a charging device capable of stably driving and rotating a charging member without using a force for pressing the charging member to a member to be charged, and uniformly charging it. SOLUTION: This contact type charging device charges or discharges the surface of the charged member by bringing a cylindrical conductive member into contact with the surface of the charged member and rotating the conductive member. The device comprises a conductive core member disposed inside the cylindrical conductive member in an axial direction, bearing members rotatably disposed at both ends of the core member and having a resilient layer in its outer circumference, and the cylindrical conductive member fitted to the outer circumference of the conductive core member and with its both longitudinal ends fittedly fixed to the outer circumference of the bearing part.
