PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vapor-phase polymerization method for an olefin wherein a dry prepolymerization catalyst for olefin polymerization excellent in olefin polymerization activity is used. SOLUTION: In this method, an olefin in a vapor phase is polymerized while a prepolymerization catalyst having a volatile content of 2.0 wt% or lower in the state of a solid powder is being supplied to a polymerization reactor. The prepolymerization catalyst is prepared by the prepolymerization of an olefin on a solid catalyst component which is prepared by causing (A) a particulate carrier comprising an oxide of at least one element selected from elements of the groups 2, 4, 12, 13, and 14 of the periodic table to carry (B) a transition metal compound of the group 4 of the periodic table and (C) an organoaluminumoxy compound.
