PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speedily restore a pair of pre-registration rolls to a neutral position when they are axially moved for skew correction for a paper sheet. SOLUTION: The paper sheet fed from a supply paper tray is sent through the pair of pre-registration rolls 2 into a pair of registration rolls 3, so that the paper sheet is fed excessively by the pre-registration rolls 2 to form a loop in the paper sheet for skew correction in this paper carrying device. It is provided with a moving means to move the pre-registration rolls from the neutral position in a thrust direction for releasing torsional stress added from the paper sheet to the pre-registration rolls 2 at the time of skew correction, a neutral restoration means to return the pre-registration rolls 2 moved from the neutral position in the thrust direction by the moving means to the neutral position after the paper sheet passes the pre-registration rolls 2, and a rotation control means 5 to set rotation speed of the pre-registration rolls 2 to be higher than the highest rotation speed when the paper sheet is carried by the pre-registration rolls 2 in restoring them to the neutral position by the neutral restoration means.
