PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing machine with improved operability and safety when locking a lid of the washing machine without increasing the cost. SOLUTION: This washing machine provided with a drum 2 storing and washing laundry, the lid 5 closing a laundry throw-in port for throwing the laundry in the drum 2, and a lock means locking the closed lid comprises as follows. This washing machine is so constituted that, after stopping the supply of a power to a motor rotating the drum 2, or a prescribed time elapsed after a brake means for stopping the drum starts a braking operation, the lock of the lid 5 of the lock means can be released.
