<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel reformer which can downsize a PEFC (polymer electrolyte fuel cell) system, hence can purge a substance remaining in the fuel reformer with a gas available without using a bomb or the like, does not cause a marked degradation of a CO reforming catalyst even in DSS (daily start-up and shut-down) operation, and stably and efficiently produces hydrogen from a hydrocarbon fuel over a long time; and a method for operating the reformer. <P>SOLUTION: The reformer comprises a reforming catalyst layer 11, a CO reforming catalyst layer 12 established behind the reforming catalyst layer 11, a combustion means 14 for heating the reforming catalyst layer 11 and the CO reforming catalyst layer 12, an evaporation means 15 for obtaining water vapor 3 supplied to the fuel-reforming catalyst layer 11 and a means 20 for preventing dew condensation in the CO reforming catalyst layer 12. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
