PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus carrying out image formations which are suitable for each of a monochrome image and a color image and which can be used for a long period of time. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus, a plurality of developing devices 61 to 65 storing one color each of a plurality of developers Y, M, C, K1 and K2 constituting developing devices 106 and 114 developing electrostatic latent images are provided facing two image carriers being a first image carrier 101 and a second image carrier 109 on which surfaces the electrostatic latent images are formed. Black developer for formation of the monochrome image K2 is stored in at least one of the plurality of developing devices. The monochrome image is formed by using the black developer for formation of the monochrome image and the color image is formed by using at least one color from the plurality of developers Y, M, C and K1 which is other than the black developer for formation of the monochrome image. The first image carrier is an OPC photoreceptor and the electrostatic latent image is developed by the developing device provided with the developing devices 61 to 64 storing the developers other than the developers used in the second image carrier. The second image carrier is an A-Si photoreceptor and the electrostatic latent images are developed by the developing device provided with the developing device 65 storing the black developer for formation of the monochrome image.
