PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for detecting a button by easily and reliably detecting the depressed position of a small operating button. SOLUTION: A plurality of ends of, e.g., a cruciform operating button 10, are used as operating parts 11-14. Contacts 15-18 are disposed on the backs of the operating parts 11-14. Information on whether the contacts 15-18 are in or out of contact is sent to a contact detecting part 20 to determine the operating positions of the operating parts 11-15 of the operating button 10 based on the contact/non-contact patterns of the contacts 15-18.
