PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that effectively solves, by a simple structure, conventional problems (in which toner which has not been separated, cleared away, and consequently remaining on an intermediate transfer belt sticks to a pressure roller, and in which residual toner re-sticking to the intermediate transfer belt later soils an image). SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a plurality of image carriers 40, the intermediate transfer belt 10, and a belt cleaning means 17 which clears away residual matter on the intermediate transfer belt 10. In the apparatus, the pressure roller 71 is disposed downstream of the belt cleaning means 17 and upstream of the primary transfer section of the furthest upstream side in order to press the intermediate transfer belt from the external surface, thereby curving the belt inside. The image forming apparatus comprises: a drive means which rotates the pressure roller 71 in the same direction as the intermediate transfer belt 10; and a cleaning member 73 disposed so as to be brought into contact with the pressure roller and separated therefrom for cleaning the surface of the pressure roller by the contact.
