PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogel capable of suitably controlling the retention and/or diffusion of a valuable substance, a gelatinous material and a method for controlling the diffusion of a substance. SOLUTION: The hydrogel at least contains a hydrogel-forming polymer giving an aqueous solution exhibiting a thermoreversible sol-gel transition to take a sol state at a low temperature and a gel state at a high temperature. The hydrogel satisfies the formulas (D<SB>PR</SB>/D<SB>MB</SB>)≥2 and (D<SB>PR</SB>/D<SB>MG</SB>)≥1.2 wherein D<SB>PR</SB>, D<SB>MB</SB>and D<SB>MG</SB>are diffusion coefficients of phenol red, methyl blue and myoglobin, respectively.
