Production of magnetic core nanoparticles and dispersions in polar and non-polar solvents comprising coprecipitation of an aqueous solution containing an iron(III) salt and a metal(II) salt with a chelant, is new. Production of magnetic core nanoparticles and dispersions in polar and non-polar solvents comprises coprecipitation of an aqueous solution containing an iron(II) salt and a metal(II) salt with a chelant. The temperature is altered, a base is added, and the precipitate is washed. The precipitate is treated with an aqueous solution of pH 0.5-11 or a salt containing iron(III)/metal(II) ions, and the resultant suspension is kept at 10-100 degrees C for 3-200 hours.
