PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoder address setting method which easily sets an encoder address, without using an address setting apparatus, etc., in the assembling or the maintenance of an encoder. SOLUTION: The address setting method for a plurality of encoders 5 interconnected in a multidrop system connects the encoders 5 to a controller 1 one after another. If the controller 1 finds a new encoder, it informs an operator thereof, requests the operator to input the address of the encoder 5 or its shaft, and sets it as an address of the encoder 5 upon inputting of the address of the encoder 5 or its shaft. When a defective encoder is replaced with a non-defective encoder, the controller 1 checks on a lost address and an added address and changes the added address to the lost address.
