[Also in Division B8] In a machine for crimping a staple around the gathered neck of a bag the anvil 37 against which the staple is driven by a driver 17 to crimp it, can be turned about a shaft 34 to present a surface suitable for a different size of bag. In the form illustrated the anvil is provided with several surfaces and is held in any of its positions of adjustment by a spring biased pawl 55 which can be released manually. The anvil 37 is turned by a screwdriver engaging in a slot which also serves as an index to indicate which surface is positioned for use. The staple is guided through a sleeve 21 mounted for sliding movement at the same time as the driver 17 by a linkage connection 26, 23 to the ram 14 driving the driver. The bag neck is gathered by a surface 50 on a spring-biased member 35 turned about a pivot 46 by a connection 34 to a guide 41 driven horizontally by a link 39 connected to the sleeve 21. The neck of the crimped bag is cut off by a guillotine 66 operated by a ram 64 mounted for ready detachment. The machine is controlled by a manual valve 72. |
