PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely adjust a head gap of a printer and to facilitate the adjustment. SOLUTION: There is disclosed the head gap adjusting device of the printer for adjusting a distance between the print head mounted on a carriage moving along a carriage shaft 150 supported by a chassis 110 and a paper sheet. A carriage shaft elevating section 130 for elevating and lowering the carriage shaft 150 by converting horizontal movement to vertical movement and transmitting the force to the carriage is provided to the chassis. A vertical opening 191 which is formed on the chassis to guide the vertical movement of the end section of the carriage shaft 150, an elastic support member 192 that elastically supports the carriage shaft 150 in the vertical opening 191, and horizontal moving mechanisms 135, 140, 133 that move the end section of the carriage shaft 150 in the vertical direction in the vertical opening 191 against the elastic force of the elastic support member 192.
