A tool holder 44 having a seat 68, 70 for accommodating a form tool 78 is clamped for rotatable adjustment in a slide member 26 which is adjustable vertically by means of a screw 28 and dove-tail guides 22 in a vertically extending portion 20 of a support 12. The tool holder 44 has planar upper and lower surfaces 60, 62 the lower surface 62 being at an angle 66, e.g. between 0 and 2 degrees, so that if the said lower surface is tilted into a horizontal plane the rake angle of the front face of the tool 78 is increased. The seating 68, 70 runs at an angle 76, e.g. between 10 and 30 degrees, along the front of the tool holder and is tilted so that the walls of the seating 68, 70 are at right-angles to each other but at an angle 74, e.g. between 8 and 23 degrees, to the vertical and horizontal respectively. The contours for the form tool 78 are produced by fixing the tool 78 in the seating and placing the toolholder on its lower surface 62 and grinding the form contour on the top face 80 of the tool 78 so that top rake is provided when the upper surface 60 is mounted horizontally. |
