The coil system has an upper disc on which is wound in a machined groove the first planar spiral coil that produces a gradient field effect. Mounted against this is a an electrically isolating carrier plate (120) that is adhesively bonded. The carrier plate has a central opening for the coil end (115). A die is used to bend the coil end to the required profile.
