The present invention provides a cartridge thermostat system (100) that permits removal and replacement of the thermostat (130) without removing the housing or coolant manifold (105). In the cartridge thermostat system (100), a coolant manifold (105) is mounted on an engine cylinder head (110). The cylinder head (110) has an engine by-pass (165) and a coolant port (120) for receiving a pilot (115) on the coolant manifold (105). The coolant manifold (105) further comprises at least one thermostat port (175) with an associate d cartridge thermostat (130) and at least one passage (170) for appropriate coolant flow. The cartridge thermostat (130) fastens to the thermostat port (175) and operatively positions a plug (155) to the engine by-pass (165) and a sleeve (807) to a coolant passage (180). A wax plug (415) in the cartridge thermostat (130) expands when the coolant is hot and thereby appropriately a nd simultaneously positions the plug (155) relative to the engine by-pass (165) and the sleeve (807) relative to the coolant passage (180).
