摘要

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the image processing apparatus capable of discriminating whether a document image included in image data indicates vertical writing or horizontal writing without the need for addition of a heavy and sophisticated function in the process of companding the image data.

SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus can discriminate whether the document image included in the image data indicates vertical writing or horizontal writing without the need for the heavy and sophisticated function by discriminating the document image originated from the image data on the basis of a characteristic of a coefficient in a vertical or horizontal direction included in a two-dimensional wavelet coefficient in the companding process of the image data in the image processing apparatus that compresses the image data in the process of transform to the two-dimensional wavelet coefficient, quantization and encoding or expands the image data compressed in the process of transform to the two-dimensional wavelet coefficient, quantization and encoding by the inverse procedure.
