PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To insert a core rod into a clad without grazing it by stabilizing their positions. SOLUTION: In a process for manufacturing an optical fiber, the tip of an optical fiber preform, composed of the core rod and a synthetic quartz tube having a hollow part into which the core rod is inserted, is heat melted and drawn while unifying the core rod and the synthetic quartz tube. Here, the difference between the outer diameter of the core rod and the inner diameter of the synthetic quartz tube is 1.0-10.0 mm. In welding a hanger tube to the tip of the synthetic quartz tube, the tip of the quartz tube and the inner side of the hanger tube are molded so that the difference between the outer diameter of the core rod and the inner diameter of the quartz tube is 1.0-10.0 mm.
