PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing a vapor phase growth carbon fiber. SOLUTION: This method for producing the carbon fiber is provided by supplying a carbon compound, precursor compound of a catalyst and specific additive component (an inorganic compound, a high boiling point organic compound, a polymer of an organic compound having a set or a higher molecular weight, etc.) into a heating zone, adjusting reaction conditions such as temperature, resident time, etc., so that at least a part of the added components present as solid or liquid in the heating zone, and thus bringing the carbon compounds in contact with the catalyst in the heated zone to produce the carbon fiber continuously.
