Compositions and methods comprising at least one active agent chosen from TGF- beta superfamily proteins, including BMPs, and GDFs for increasing the growth rate of modulating the development of engineered cartilage are disclosed. The compositions are useful in the treatment of osteoarthritis, cartilage defects, and in related tissue repair.
