PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To distinguish with high precision between a letter area and a halftone dot area, and a black letter area and a line drawing area toward an area to which a pixel of image data belong. SOLUTION: A second image area distinguishing circuit 3b is provided with a line memory 101, a color determining circuit 102, an edge distinguishing circuit 103, and a determination processing circuit 104. The color determining circuit 102 is provided with a color detecting circuit 122 detecting a black part about the pixel in a first area consisting of a pixel to be interpolated in the image data at every color ingredient and the pixel near to the pixel to be interpolated, a count circuit 123 counting the number of a block pixel and a pixel of color other than black respectively about the pixel in the first area, and a black color detecting circuit 124 detecting which the pixel to be interpolated belongs to the black letter area or the line drawing area, based on the output result of these color detecting circuit 122, count circuit 123 and edge distinguishing circuit 103.
