Carbon or alloy steel is treated to reduce its hydrogen content by blowing on to the slag-covered melt at atmospheric pressure a halogen, carbon tetrachloride or a halogen compound other than calcium fluoride which decomposes or reacts with the slag to yield halogen but no atomic hydrogen, the halogen or halogen compound being carried in a gas consisting substantially of free oxygen. The treatment may be applied at any stage in the steel making process, but should preferably be applied to the final slag of a multi-slag process.
|
