Phase offset is determined using iterative approximation, for at least one phase indicator trace, as follows. Commencing with a given offset (ao), this is added to the measured phase value (ak), followed by transformation in the time domain (Tk). The discontinuous portion of the transformed values (tk) is determined. A mean (tmean) is formed from the prior discontinuous portions (tk). Back calculation produces the offset value (DELTAa0). The offset value (ao,neu) is matched. Approximation is continued, adding the offset value (ao), until a given number of iterations is reached or a criterion for stopping is met.
