PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing, under unpressurized conditions, a cerium dioxide powder which has a primary particle diameter of≤100 nm and gives a slurry hardly settling. SOLUTION: The cerium dioxide powder is manufactured by firing a cerium salt in an atmosphere containing hydrogen chloride and oxygen. The method comprises a process 1 where the cerium salt is calcined to obtain a calcined product and a process 2 where the calcined product is fired in the atmosphere containing hydrogen chloride and oxygen. The primary particle of the cerium dioxide powder has a diameter of≤100 nm and a polyhedral shape, and the powder does not contain primary particles≥0.5μm. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
