PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently execute side stitching and saddle stitching by using a pair of divided type staplers and by ensuring the relative positional accuracy of the staplers. SOLUTION: A stitcher part and a clincher are constituted integrally or separately. On the occasion when a plurality of paper sheets being present between the stitcher part and the clincher part are stitched by staples, the stitcher part and the clincher part are moved in parallel synchronously in the direction intersecting perpendicularly the direction of carrying the sheets and rotated as they are or on the same axis to execute parallel stitching or diagonal stitching. On the occasion of transfer to the subsequent stitching operation thereafter and in the case of this operation being made at the same position for a paper bundle of the same paper size, the stitcher part and the clincher part return to preset positions being nearer to the stitching positions than the home positions thereof and not impeding carrying-in of the sheets and always move in one direction to the stitching positions to execute the stitching operation.
