A pre-loaded roller bearing unit comprises main thrust races (1 and 4) having rollers (6) therebetween, a pre-load member (10), which is axially adjustable with respect to the race (1) to apply a desired amount of pre-load to the race (4), and a pre-load ball-thrust bearing (14) positioned between the race (4) and the preload member (10). The pre-load ball-thrust bearing (14) withstands the pre-load thrust only and not the main bearing thrust. The pre-load is applied by means of a bolt (19) which passes through a central bore (20) of the pre-load member (10) and is threaded into the thrust race (1), a head (22) of the bolt (19) being received in a counterbore (23) in the pre-load mem her (10). The race (1) has a central bore (9 which receives a spigot (12) of the pre-load member (10) and relative rotation is prevented by means of a key (11). The pre-load member (10) is stepped at (16) to receive the ball thrust bearing (14) and seals are provided between the races (1 and 4). When pre-loading is being applied, the bolt (19) is tightened while the race (4) is being rotated. When the required preloading is obtained, a locking-sleeve (24), having a hexagonal-shape bore therein, is fitted over the bolt-head (22). The locking-sleeve (24), having holes therein, is secured to the pre-load member 10, having tapped holes therein, by set-screws (25). |
