The combined inlet and exhaust valve comprises a hollow valve member 24 carrying a sealing ring 30 held by a sleeve 34 and co-operating with a shaped sealing surface on a flange 20 of a fixed sloeve 22, these parts constituting the inlet valve. The exhaust valve is constituted by a closure crown 26 on the valve member co-operating with a disc seal 50 forming part of an actuating piston 46. In a vehicle pressure braking system this piston may be moved through a rocker (70), Fig. 1 (not shown). In the servo-auto-distributer shown, the pressure in the automatic braking conduit at 55 is connected, in idling condition, through a chamber D and an open valve 66 positioned in a second piston 56, to a chamber C. Piston 56 is held up by a spring 57. The pressure in chamber C is delivered through a passage 96, control valve 78, 79, conduit 94 and outlet 92 to the trailer tank. If the distributer on the vehicle is operated, air is delivered at 45 into a chamber F to move piston 46 and close the exhaust valve 26, 50. The inlet valve 28, 20 is opened and connects the trailer tank to the brakes through chambers A and G and manifold outlets (102), Fig. 5 (not shown). When the action on the distributer ceases, chamber F is connected to atmosphere and piston 46 again lifted. During emergency braking, effected by discharging the pressure in an automatic braking pipe connected at 55, valve 66 closes and depression of piston 56, operates the piston 46 through a stem 54 to apply the brakes. This also results if the trailer is disconnected, the brakes being subsequently released by moving the control valve to the left to isolate the trailer tank from chamber B and vent the latter to atmosphere at 95. Meanwhile equal pressures are established in chambers C and D and the device returns to initial position, G being vented to render the trailer brakes inoperative. The control valve may be maintained in the corresponding position by disengaging a part 91 and re-engaging it with a cap 88.</p>
