The invention relates to a method and to a device for compressing data (46). The aim of the invention is to allow for a simple and rapid evaluation of the compressed data. To this end, the invention provides for the following steps: receiving a data sequence with at least two data points, storing the data points as a set to be instantaneously processed, calculating coefficients of a first tree structure (42) (overview tree) from the received data points (46) and determining layers (50, 56, 58) of the first tree structure (42), calculating the coefficients of a corresponding second tree structure (44) (compression tree) from the coefficients of one of the layers (50, 56, 58), respectively, of the first tree structure (42), and determining layers (50, 56, 58) of the second tree structures (44), sorting and/or filtering the coefficients of the layers (50, 56, 58) of the second tree structures (44), and storing those coefficients of the second tree structures (44) that, due to sorting and/or filtering, are suitable for reconstructing the received data sequence.
