PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning optical device which is compact and suitable for high-definition printing by properly setting the lens shape of an fθlens. SOLUTION: The scanning optical device images luminous flux exiting from a light source means on a deflecting surface of a deflecting element 5 linearly in a horizontal scanning direction through a 1st optical element 2 and a 2nd optical element 4, and then images the luminous flux deflected by the deflecting element in a spot on a scanned surface 8 through a 3rd optical element 6 to scan the scanned surface. The 3rd optical element is formed of a single lens, both the lens surfaces of which are both toric surfaces aspherical in a horizontal scanning plane. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
