A belt drive with variable torque has the driven wheel fitted with a disc on which are fitted a pair of pegs on diagonally opposite sides to the central axis and with variable spacing to the axis. The system can be extended by a number a parallel belt drives whose pegs are at various angular spacing, to provide a smooth torque transfer. The design can be applied to belt drives and chain drives.
