PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium having a thin film magnetic layer essentially consisting ofγ-Fe<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>sufficiently reduced in remaining Fe<SB>3</SB>O<SB>4</SB>, and having high anti-corrosive, hardness, and an excellent magnetic characteristic. SOLUTION: Using the magnetron sputtering method, a thin film of Fe<SB>3</SB>O<SB>4</SB>is formed on a substrate, and then, this Fe<SB>3</SB>O<SB>4</SB>film is treated for heat oxidation at 300°C for two hours in the atmosphere into a crudeγ-Fe<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>thin film magnetic layer, and thereafter, the crudeγ-Fe<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>thin film magnetic layer is further oxidized under an environment at 40-90°C and 60% Rh or higher, for instance, an oxidation treatment (oxidation treatment under a high temperature and high humidity environment) is conducted thereto for 150 hours for making the layer into theγ-Fe<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>magnetic thin film magnetic layer.
