PURPOSE: An elevator system is provided to suppress production of an unused space in an elevator shaft. CONSTITUTION: An elevator system comprises a car(1) hoisted and lowered in an elevator shaft(8), a guide rail(6) for the car restricting the horizontal movement of the car, a counter weight(2) moving in a direction opposite to the car, a guide rail(7) for the counter weight, a winch(4), a rope(3) suspending the car and the counter weight, a first direction conversion pulley(5a), and a second direction conversion pulley(5b). The car has an entrance, first and second car walls each arranged on the sides of the entrance, and a third car wall connected to the first and second car walls and opposed to the entrance. The counter weight is arranged between the third car wall and a first elevator shaft wall opposed to the third car wall. The winch includes a sheave(4a) and a motor for driving the sheave. The sheave is opposed to the first elevator shaft wall and the motor is arranged to the third car wall surface. The size of the outer surface of a rotating shaft direction of the sheave is smaller than the size of the outer surface of a direction perpendicular to a rotating shaft of the sheave. The rope is wound on the sheave. A part of the rope from the sheave to the car is wound on the first direction conversion pulley. A part of the rope from the sheave to the counter weight is wound on the second direction conversion pulley.
